History

219 Clubs from across Victoria entered the competition and only two remain: Heidelberg United FC and South Melbourne FC.

Named after football pioneer and Football Victoria Hall of Fame member Harry Dockerty, the tournament was first played in 1909 and this year's edition marks the 100th time the Cup will be contested.

Heidelberg United

One of Victoria’s proudest clubs, Heidelberg United have not enjoyed the greatest of success in Victoria’s longest running Cup competition. This will be their seventh final, and a single victory in 2017 (a thrilling penalty-shootout victory against John Anastasiadis’ Bentleigh Greens) remains their only Cup win. They have enjoyed a comfortable run to the final, with wins against opposition from first four tiers in the pyramid, their opening round at Churchill Reserve their only victory against NPL opposition. A resurgent opposition and history against them (just one win in six finals) suggests the pressure will be on for this year’s Cup favourites.

South Melbourne

Defending a cup win is never easy, though South Melbourne have managed it twice in their history and with a record-equalling ninth victory win against Oakleigh Cannons in 2024, can go back-to-back for a record third time. A winless run and change of Head Coach has resulted in a middling League campaign, but their Cup form has been impeccable once again. Wins against VPL opposition in their first three rounds were followed by a shootout victory over Dandenong City and their most complete display of the season in the semi-final, a 3-1 win against the Avengers. South will be hoping to carry their Cup form into the final.

This will be the 123rd meeting between two of Victoria’s great rivals. Will South Melbourne etch their name in history and win the Dockerty Cup for a record 10th time? Can Heidelberg United add to their lone triumph in 2017 and land the first major piece of silverware this year? Find out. Buy your tickets now!
